The Adalaj Stepwell

Adalaj Stepwell also known as Rudabai Stepwell is located in Adalai Village in Gandhinagar District around 20 kms from Ahmedabad city in Gujarat, India. Adalaj Stepwell was constructed by Queen Rudadevi in memory of Rana Veer Singh in the year 1498. Adalaj Stepwell is a beautiful example of Indian Architecture. Adalaj Stepwell is a a five storey stepwell which is a beauty in itself. Adalaj Stepwell is a great example of Indo Islamic architecture where you can see mixture of Hindu craftsmanship as well as fine art of Islamic architecture. Adalaj Stepwell was used to be a place for relaxation for devotees and caravans. Nearby villagers used to come and take the water from Adalaj Stepwell and also pray to their deities which were carved on the walls of stepwell. The construction of Adalaj Stepwell is so unique that it does not get direct sunlight except for sometime during afternoon and therefore, the temperature inside Adalaj Stepwell is around six degrees lesser than the outside temperature. The other unique quality of Adalaj Stepwell is that though there are many other stepwells are located in Gujarat but only Adalaj Stepwell has three entrance stairs which meet at the first underground storey from where tourists see the beauty of Adalaj Stewell. The walls of Adalaj Stepwell are beautifully carved with kings, dancers, women churning buttermilk and musicians along with many mythological art paintings.
