About Gangotri Temple

Gangotri Temple, the highest temple dedicated to Goddess Ganga and is one of the four Chota Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand. Gangotri Temple is an ancient temple situated on the left bank of the Bhagirathi River. Gangotri Temple is a religiously important temple in Hinduism. The sacred temple and the ever so gorgeous River Ganga with the surroundings offer a scenic view of the breathtaking Himalayas.  It was built by a Gorkha general, Amar Singh Thapa, in the early 18th century. Gangotri is the origin of the River Ganges and originates at Gaumukh in Gangotri Glacier. The 20-foot temple of Gangotri is built with marble and various rituals are performed by the priests of the Semwal family. On Janmashtami, Vijaydashmi and Diwali Special Poojas are performed in the Temple. During summer, Jalmagna Shivling, which remains immersed in water and is one of the major attractions of Gangotri. During the winter, this natural Shivling is visible only when the water level goes down. The temple opens on the day of Akshaya Tritiya in the month of May and it closes down on Diwali, which is in October / November. The temple closed for the remaining period and the deity is worshipped at Mukhyamath Temple in Mukhba village, near Harsil.
