About Yamunotri Temple
Yamunotri Temple is situated in the western region of the Garhwal Himalayas and is one of the four sites of the Char Dham pilgrimage. It is located at an altitude of 3293 mts above sea level in Uttarkashi district. The Bandarpunch Mountain lies north of Yamunotri at a height of 6315 mts. Yamunotri is famous for its thermal springs and a glacier is a part of the famous Char Dham Yatra. The river Yamuna, the second most sacred river in India, originates in Yamunotri. The Temple is surrounded by mountains on all sides and lies in close proximity to the Indo-China border. The temple was built by the Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century and it was reconstructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal. The temple is dedicated to the Giddess river Yamuna and the deity is made of black marble. The Yamunotri temple closes its portals as winter approaches on Yama Dwitiya (second day after Diwali or on Bhai Dooj).
