Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid, the largest mosque in India is situated in a crowded area of Old Delhi Chandni Chowk. Jama Masjid can hold around 25000 devotees in its courtyard. Construction of Jama masjid which is also known as Masjid I Jahan Numa started around 1644 and ended around 1656 during the rule of Shah Jahan who also built Red Fort and Taj Mahal. It is believed that at the time construction of Jama Masjid expense was around one million rupees. The mosque has three gates, four towers and two 40 meter high minarets which are built of strips of red sandstone and white marble. Jama Msajid has around 121 steps. Every year thousands of devotees visit Jama Masjid on Eid to offer Namaz in the morning. Please note that non Muslims are not allowed in the Masjid during Namaz. Though during morning hours crowd will be less and it is best time to visit the mosque, still If you want to experience the Old culture of Delhi than visit Jama Masjid during evening when the neighborhood area of Jama Masjid is filled with delicious food stalls and book vendors (Remember it will be very crowded during evening time). Timings:- 7am to 12pm and from 130pm to 630pm (Non Muslims are not allowed to enter in Jama Masjid during Namaz)

Entry Charges:- Free. However for photography, you need to pay approx.. INR 300 and for climbing the southern minaret, INR 100.
